Complete home moving checklist for 2013

Moving to a new home is an exciting experience, but it can also be stressful if you are not prepared. Everything you need to be prepared for your home move can be found in Transport Penn's 2013 full home moving checklist. Knowing the proper moving procedures is essential, and it can save you lots of headaches and extra costs.

1 month before the move
Book your date in advance to reserve a moving truck for the day you need it. Confirm address and time.
Get packing equipment (boxes, masking tape, markers, cellophane wrap)
Packing materials can be purchased directly from Transport Penn at the client’s request.
Take a look around the house and begin preparing a list of what you would like to take with you
Sort through closets, drawers, cupboards etc… and set aside items you don’t want or need.
Unwanted items can be donated to charities, sold in a garage sale or put for sale online.
(Websites such as Kijiji.com allow you to place free ads. Items titled moving sale go extra quickly!)
Begin packing items you do not use regularly or will not need until after the move.
Clearly label your boxes: fragile, valuable, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc… be specific.
Pack your vital documents in one place (passports, mortgage records, marriage certificate, birth certificates, insurance papers, bank records, school records, medical records, tax records, etc…)
Keep these important documents in a safe place to ensure they do not get packed away with the rest of your things. Label box ‘important’ and transport it yourself to avoid mix-up.
Notify your friends and family, doctors, dentist, service providers, banks, credit card companies and all other companies with whom you do business that you will be moving.
Notify your children’s schools of the move and contact new schools for enrolment information.
Cancel or change mailing address of any subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, memberships, etc.
Contact your insurance agent to verify if changes to your policies are necessary
If moving into or out of an apartment or condo, book the elevator.
(This step is especially important if you live in Montreal and plan to move on July 1st)
If necessary, arrange for storage of excess items that will not fit in your new home.
Begin using perishable food items so they will not go to waste.

2 weeks before the move
Call utility companies to set end date for your services, and make arrangements to connect utilities to your new home (cable, internet, phone, electricity, heating oil)
Have the old companies send final invoices to your new address.
Have meters read by Hydro Québec to avoid consumption charges which are not yours.
Empty any containers or equipment with combustible or flammable contents
Plan what goes in the car with you: Essentials box, valuables box, important box, 1st night box
(Pets, plants, vacuum cleaner if you want to clean the new place right away)
Arrange payment for moving services
Re-confirm moving date, and notify us of any changes, special instructions or directions you may have.
If necessary, arrange for a babysitter that will watch your children on moving day

Day before the move
Unplug all major appliances
Defrost, clean and air out your refrigerator
Measure space between door frames to insure appliances and other large furniture will fit through.
(A space between 27 and 28 inches will be a tight squeeze and will require the door to be removed.)
Dismantle: beds, kitchen table, mirrors attached to armoires, sofa legs, and all other large items.
Tip (If it was brought in in pieces, it goes out in pieces)
Take down curtains and curtain rods
Prepare a box labelled ‘valuables’ that you may wish to transport yourself
(Jewellery, collectables, family heirlooms etc.)
Prepare a box labelled ‘essentials’ that you will want to have on hand moving day
(Toiletries, shampoo, soap, tooth brushes, toilet paper, medication, first aid kit, change of clothes, etc.)
It is important to reserve the parking space needed by the moving truck to ensure easy access to your home. (You can do this by parking in the space needed or placing traffic cones in the space.)
This step can save you lots of time and money
Prepare a simple breakfast for the next morning as well as water and food for moving day.
Be sure to get a good night's sleep.

Moving day
Do a walkthrough with the movers to inform them of any special instructions or condition reports.
Stay close by and allow our movers to begin their work.
Complete a final walkthrough, to confirm that nothing is left behind. Verify (all rooms, cupboards, closets and garage)
Make sure all windows and doors are locked, and get all keys together for final lockdown.
